It was the first Embassy Moto event, the first Embassy pole position and we finished the race - FIRST!
The opening round of the British Superbike season at Brands Hatch over the Easter weekend saw Superstock rider, Glen Richards, bring the Embassy Racing Yamaha R1 past the chequered flag to win the first ever Embassy Racing Moto event. The achievement is even more remarkable when you think that team boss Jonathan France only gave the go-ahead for the project just over three weeks ago.
Easter for once, provided glorious weather and the 42 000 fans basking in Mediterranean style sunshine saw Glen secure pole position in his first qualifying session after just two laps.
Starting from pole, Glen was disappointingly passed early on by four riders, but through the course of the first half of the race he calmly picked up places to take the lead after half distance. The safety car prevented him from getting away from the chasing pack, but his class showed and in the end he led the last 7 laps to win by just under a second.
Speaking about his fabulous win Glen said:
It has been an amazing past few weeks for me. To come to Embassy racing and get this project off the ground in such a short time is unbelievable. I can’t remember when I’ve enjoyed racing so much, the bike is wonderful, the team is great and I just want to get out there and race. I am delighted for Jonathan and want to thank him again for giving me the opportunity to race in front of the BSB crowd.
Team Principal Jonathan France said:
Unfortunately I couldn’t be at the race due to other commitments, but I was getting lap by lap updates by text - I think I held my breath for ten minutes! I am delighted with the win not least because the whole thing was put together with very little time and I feel it highlights the professional approach of the entire Embassy operation. I am very pleased and very proud.
